The Characters of Neverwhere

Description

My latest school assignment. I love doing character design!:D

These characters are inspired by the book Neverwhere written by Neil Gaiman.

From left to right:
Richard: The main character. He is an ordinary dude, who stumbles into London underworld after saving the life of the newly orphaned Door. After he saves her no one in London above can see or remember him anymore so he has to journey through the underworld to get his old life back.
Door: A young underworld lady who has a gift for opening doors. Her entire family has been murdered and she is looking for the people who is responsible for it.
The Marquise De Carabas: He is a dodgy fellow who agrees to help Door because he owed her father a big favour.
Hunter: Is a fierce lady who Door hires as a bodyguard.
Mr. Vandemar & Mr. Croup: They are probably the most awesome pair of villains ever created! They enjoy things that are dead, and they are hunting Door.
Islington: It is an angel trapped somewhere in the underworld. Richard has to help Door to find it so they can find the answer to why her family was killed and so Richard can find a way back to London above.

I mostly followed the descriptions from the book, but I also tried to make the characters like the image I had in my head while reading the books. De Carabas is described as a man with skin so dark his eyes and teeth almost shines, but a lot of people illustrate him as a white man. I too pictured him as a dirty faced white dude until I reread his description. Richard never figured out where Hunter was from so I tried to give her an exotic look. Mr. Croup and Mr. Wandemar was the hardest to make based on the description of their suits. I ended up giving them pretty ordinary, but gentlemanly looking outfits. Islingtons halo like glow was fun to do, but I don’t think I managed that gender-neutral look.

Lineart was done traditionally. Colours and texture in Photoshop.

I appreciate constructive comments!:D

I absolutely adore your design for Door. So much so that I've made it and will be cosplaying her on Sunday at London MCM. Do you have an Instagram account I can credit you with? (so far I just gave your Deviant Art name)
