The Characters of Neverwhere by Segundus The Characters of Neverwhere by Segundus
My latest school assignment. I love doing character design!:D

These characters are inspired by the book Neverwhere written by Neil Gaiman.

From left to right:
Richard: The main character. He is an ordinary dude, who stumbles into London underworld after saving the life of the newly orphaned Door. After he saves her no one in London above can see or remember him anymore so he has to journey through the underworld to get his old life back.
Door: A young underworld lady who has a gift for opening doors. Her entire family has been murdered and she is looking for the people who is responsible for it.
The Marquise De Carabas: He is a dodgy fellow who agrees to help Door because he owed her father a big favour.
Hunter: Is a fierce lady who Door hires as a bodyguard.
Mr. Vandemar & Mr. Croup: They are probably the most awesome pair of villains ever created! They enjoy things that are dead, and they are hunting Door.
Islington: It is an angel trapped somewhere in the underworld. Richard has to help Door to find it so they can find the answer to why her family was killed and so Richard can find a way back to London above.

I mostly followed the descriptions from the book, but I also tried to make the characters like the image I had in my head while reading the books. De Carabas is described as a man with skin so dark his eyes and teeth almost shines, but a lot of people illustrate him as a white man. I too pictured him as a dirty faced white dude until I reread his description. Richard never figured out where Hunter was from so I tried to give her an exotic look. Mr. Croup and Mr. Wandemar was the hardest to make based on the description of their suits. I ended up giving them pretty ordinary, but gentlemanly looking outfits. Islingtons halo like glow was fun to do, but I donít think I managed that gender-neutral look.

Lineart was done traditionally. Colours and texture in Photoshop.

I appreciate constructive comments!:D

Hunter: AWESOME. The rest are super-cool too but Hunter's design in particular is just really striking. Great job!

somehow I always pictured Hunter as being more native with darker skin, and Door as having long, brown hair. I imagined the Marquis as having shorter hair with curls... >< I should pay attention to the details more...

Well, I took some liberties in my designs. And yes, Hunter should have darker skin, I just never noticed how light it looked compared to the white characters when I made this. I kind of regret that.:P

It's nice, but Hunter is black - or at the very minimum, not white. . . . Gaiman makes dozens of references to her caramel or burnt sugar complexion.

Richard, however, is very well done.

I know she's not white. While the actress who portrayed her in the TV-show was black, I went with the description that said she had long tawny hair and skin. Her ethnicity was kind of ambiguous to me so I tended to imagine her as a person of mixed race thought that was never stated. That said, I understand why you're reacting to her paleness. Compared with the other characters here my depiction of her is quite, well, white, something I didn't pay attention to back when I made this. In hindsight, there are also a lot of other things I should have considered, like how facial features differ between people of different colours for instance.

I was GOING to write really long, detailed compliment, but I guess that's all been erased since my gpbrower crashed on me, grrr! Here you go; I'll do my best to recreate it:
I love how you made Richard look scared. He looks fairly handsome, too, just as Gaiman would have him.
Door is perfect. I imagined her clothes to be less colorful, and if I had drawn her, I would have stubbornly made her hair long, because I didn't want to have door look scraggly. I appreciate the fact that you completely followed Gaiman's descriptions.
The marquis de Carabas being black: very nice touch. I didn't consider that myself, but I think it's better that way. I also like the patches you added to his clothing. It makes more sense.
Hunter looks exotic, definitely. Great job on that.
Oh, I love how you did Croup and Vandemar. I honestly considered Vandemar to look a little stupider, a little wider, but this works with his look of hard cruelty. The added elegance to his posture also adds to that. I like that. And Mr. Croup looks perfectly malevolent, devious, and scheming. I love it!!
Ah, and finally, the Angel Islington. Dude, despite what you think, you totally aced the whole unisex thing. And you excel in the glowy-clothes department. That he has no eyebrows adds to his asexuality.
This is sooo great!! Please draw more Neverwhere things!! :D

Thank you for the thorough comment! I really appreciate it:D
I wanted to follow the descriptions in the book, but at the same time do my own thing. Richard was hard seeing as he's suppose to be an ordinary dude, and compared to the other characters he just looked boring, and he still does, but little things like just making his shoes red helps a lot.

I think the Marquise de Carabas was always meant to be black. It's just that people don't catch that from the text. I always automatically think of characters as white myself, unless it's specifically stated that they are a person of colour. Which is a bit silly of me considering that the Marquise is described as having skin so dark that the withe in his eyes and his teeth were popping out at you compared to it. I should have realized:P

Love it! :D I want to draw my own too. I just finished the book last weekend. XD I thought that Croup was skinny, and then I read about the show online. Lolz. I fail.
I love your Islington! It's so androgynous and cute.

I absolutely adore these! They don't match my own imagery when reading the book, but I could immediately recognize each of them. Your lines are wonderfully clean, and I am in love with your rendition of Door, especially. :) I think the features on Islington are a bit more feminine than would effectively make it look truly sexless, but sexlessness is damned difficult to achieve in a comic style. Your Croup and Vandemar are truly entertaining, though they could be scarier. ^_^ Overall, though, I absolutely love these. Your shapes and proportions are superb for the style you chose, and the coloring is great!

Hehe. They sort of don't mach my own image of them either when I read the book. It's when I went back and reread their descriptions that I found out I had them all wrong. Only Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar is as I immagined them.

I know what you mean. It would probably help if I just made both him and Mr. Croup larger. (Some people think Croup is to small.)
